Traffic Diversion Announced for Vesak 2026 Procession and Lantern Release at Borobudur

The Magelang Traffic Police (Satlantas Polresta Magelang) have announced a series of traffic engineering measures and temporary road closures during the Vesak 2570 BE / 2026 celebrations at the Borobudur Temple area on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The traffic arrangements will be implemented to support the sacred Vesak procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple, as well as the evening lantern release event that is expected to attract thousands of pilgrims and visitors. (Borobudur Sunrise)

Road Closures During the Vesak Procession

According to the official traffic diversion map, traffic restrictions will begin at 10:00 AM WIB until the procession is completed.

Several intersections along the procession route will be temporarily closed, while alternative routes have been prepared for motorists traveling between Magelang and Yogyakarta.

Authorities stated that vehicles coming from Salaman heading toward Yogyakarta and vice versa will be redirected through alternative routes, including:

  • SP4 Koramil
  • SP3 Sigug
  • SP3 Ngaroto
  • SP4 Deyangan
  • SP4 Kubah Kuning
  • SP3 Rambeanak
  • SP3 Cabean
  • SP3 Palbapang

In addition, traffic from Ngaran Bawah toward Bu Sum will be fully closed, while vehicles from the Hotel Doman area will be diverted to the right toward Bu Sum.

The traffic engineering is intended to ensure the smooth movement of Buddhist monks, devotees, and participants joining the traditional Vesak procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple. (Borobudur Sunrise)

Special Arrangements for Lantern Release Visitors

Separate traffic and parking arrangements have also been prepared for visitors attending the Vesak lantern release event at Borobudur Temple.

Designated parking areas include:

KSB Parking Area – Capacity: 500 vehicles

Njanan Village Parking Area – Capacity: 100 vehicles

Ngaran Village Parking Area – Capacity: 150 vehicles

Manohara Hotel Parking Area – Capacity: 70 vehicles

VIP guests arriving from the Karet intersection will be directed through Brojonalan and Bu Sum before entering Gate 7 of Borobudur Temple.

Meanwhile, general visitors will be directed through designated routes leading to Kampung Seni Borobudur or the Njanan parking area before continuing to the event venue.

Thousands Expected to Attend Vesak Celebrations

Vesak 2026 celebrations at Borobudur are expected to draw large crowds from across Indonesia and abroad. The event will feature the traditional Vesak procession, meditation ceremonies, the sacred Vesak moment, and the highly anticipated lantern festival.
